Okay, so I was browsing around the other day, looking for something new to try in the kitchen. I stumbled upon this “12 Tomatoes” thing, and they had a bunch of dessert recipes. I thought, “Why not?” and decided to give some of them a go. Let me tell you, it was quite the adventure!

First Steps

First off, I gathered all my ingredients. I wanted to try a few different recipes, so I made a big shopping list. Tomatoes, sugar, flour, the usual stuff. But also some weird ones like basil and chocolate—who would’ve thought to put those with tomatoes in a dessert?

I started with something called a “Tomato Basil Sorbet”. Sounds fancy, right? I chopped up some fresh tomatoes and basil, mixed them with a bit of sugar, and threw them in my ice cream maker. I have to say, the smell was… interesting. Not bad, just different.

Experiments

  • Tomato Basil Sorbet: This one was a surprise. It was sweet but also had that herby kick from the basil. Kind of refreshing, actually. I let it churn in the ice cream maker for about 30 minutes, and it came out pretty good. I scooped some into a bowl and even added a little basil leaf on top to make it look nice.
  • Tomato and Chocolate Tart: Now, this was a wild one. I made a basic tart crust and then did a layer of sliced tomatoes. Topped that with some melted chocolate. Baked it in the oven at 350 degrees for around 25 minutes. The combination of warm tomatoes and chocolate was definitely something else.

The Verdict

I gotta say, using tomatoes in desserts is a game-changer. It’s not something you see every day, but it works. The sorbet was light and refreshing, perfect for a hot day. The tart was rich and had that unique sweetness from the tomatoes.

I even tried a few more, like a tomato jam that I spread on toast (yeah, not really a dessert, but still tasty) and some candied tomatoes that were surprisingly good. I just boiled some cherry tomatoes in sugar water until they got all sticky and sweet, and then let them dry.

It’s been a fun experience trying these recipes. I never thought I’d be putting tomatoes in my desserts, but here we are. I even shared some with my neighbors, and they were just as surprised as I was. Some loved it, some were a bit unsure, but everyone agreed it was something different.

So, if you’re looking to try something new, give these tomato desserts a shot. You might just be surprised at how good they are. I know I was! I’m not a professional chef or anything, but it was fun to experiment and see what worked. And who knows, maybe I’ll come up with my own tomato dessert recipe next!
