Alright, so the holidays were rollin’ around, and I got this itch, you know? I wanted to make some Christmas tree cookies, but not just any cookies. I had this specific vision for the tree shape, and lemme tell ya, none of the store-bought cutters were cuttin’ it. They were all too… I dunno, generic. So, I thought, why not just make my own? Seemed like a fun little project.

Figuring Out How to Actually Make the Thing

First, I thought, maybe I could bend some metal? Like those old-school ones. But then I remembered I’m pretty rubbish with that kind of stuff. My hands would probably look like I’d been wrestling a cactus. Plus, trying to make sure it was food-safe? That’s a whole other kettle of fish. It’s funny, reminds me of the time I tried to assemble a flat-pack bookshelf. Instructions looked easy. The bookshelf ended up looking like a modern art sculpture, and not in a good way. So, yeah, metal bending was a no-go for me.

Then it hit me – the 3D printer! It’s been sitting there, gathering a bit of dust, to be honest. This was the perfect excuse to fire it up and see if I could actually make something useful with it for a change.

Getting it onto the Screen

So, I plonked myself down at the computer. Now, I’m no design whizz, not by a long shot. I basically just poked around in some free software I found. Tried to draw a tree shape. Then another. Man, getting the proportions to look like an actual tree and not some weird blob was tricky. My first few attempts looked more like lopsided arrows or, as my partner kindly pointed out, a “sad, deflated starfish.” Charming.

  • I tried to make the base a bit wider so it wouldn’t topple over.
  • Spent ages trying to get those classic pointy branches, not too sharp, not too round.
  • Even got ambitious and tried to add a little star on top. Figured, go big or go home, right?

Finally, after a fair bit of fiddling and probably too much coffee, I had something on the screen that vaguely resembled a Christmas tree. Good enough for a first shot, I reckoned.

Let the Plastic Flow (or Not)

Sent the file over to the printer. There’s something kinda cool about watching those things build something out of nothing, layer by layer. Took a couple of hours, which felt like forever. And then… the grand reveal. The first one was a total flop. It was super flimsy. The walls were way too thin. I tried to press it into some play-doh I pinched from the kids’ art box (for testing purposes, you understand), and it just sort of buckled and folded. The little star on top? Oh, that snapped right off if you even looked at it too hard. Useless. Absolutely, completely useless.

It was a bit like that one time I followed a recipe for “easy” sourdough. Mine came out looking and feeling like a house brick. Some things just look simpler than they are, don’t they?

Round Two: Thicker, Stronger, Better?

Okay, so, not one to be beaten by a bit of plastic, it was back to the computer. I made the walls thicker. Like, way thicker this time. Beefed up how the star connected to the main tree part. Double-checked all the settings I could find. I wasn’t gonna let this Christmas tree cutter get the better of me. This time, I was feeling a bit more hopeful. Or maybe just more stubborn. It’s a fine line.

Fired up the printer again. Another couple of hours of that whirring sound. The suspense was… well, it was there. I mostly just scrolled through my phone.

And We Have a Cookie Cutter!

And this time? Bingo! Success! Well, pretty much. It came out solid. It actually felt like a proper cookie cutter. The star stayed firmly attached! I grabbed that play-doh again, gave it a press, and bam! A perfect little Christmas tree shape stared back at me. Okay, maybe not perfectly perfect, the edges were a little rougher than something you’d buy in a fancy kitchen shop, but it was my Christmas tree. Made by me.

I was pretty chuffed with myself, not gonna lie. Paraded it around the house a bit. The family seemed suitably impressed. Or at least they did a good job of pretending to be. That’s all that counts in the end, isn’t it?

The True Test: Dough Time

Of course, the real proof of the pudding, or in this case, the cookie, is in the eating. Or the cutting, first. So, we whipped up a batch of gingerbread dough. The moment of truth. The cutter worked like a dream. Pressed in, popped out little trees. They weren’t the most super-detailed cookies the world has ever seen, but they were made with a homemade, 3D-printed cutter. That’s gotta count for some serious brownie points, or gingerbread points.

Ended up making a whole forest of ’em. The kids had an absolute blast decorating them. Sprinkles. Everywhere. It was messy, it was chaotic, it was fun. That’s what holiday baking is all about, right?

So, Was It Worth the Hassle?

Looking back on it, yeah, it was a bit of a faff. I definitely could’ve just popped to the shops and bought a Christmas tree cookie cutter for a few quid. Saved myself a fair bit of time and head-scratching. But where’s the adventure in that? There’s something genuinely satisfying about making a tool, even a simple little thing like this, and then actually using it to create something else.

Plus, now I can casually drop into conversation that I design and 3D print my own bespoke baking equipment. Sounds dead fancy, doesn’t it? Even if it’s just a cookie cutter. And you know what? Next year, maybe I’ll tackle a snowman. Or a reindeer. Now that I’ve sort of, kind of, got the hang of it. Or maybe I’ll just forget all this and buy one from the shop. We’ll see. That’s the thing with these little home projects, they have a funny way of sucking you in.
