So, I found myself down in Savannah, you know how it is. You get near the coast, and suddenly, all you can think about is seafood. Just gotta have it. I’d heard a few folks mention a place called ‘Top Crab Seafood and Bar,’ so I figured, why not? I wasn’t expecting the world, just a decent meal, something to scratch that seafood itch.

I walked in, and the place had that pretty standard seafood joint feel. Nothing too fancy, a bit loud, which is fine by me. Sometimes you just want to get stuck in without worrying about which fork to use. They had a bar area, looked like your average setup. Got seated pretty fast, which was good. I get antsy when I’m hungry and have to wait around.

The server came by. Seemed okay, looked busy, but wasn’t ignoring us or anything. I grabbed the menu. It was pretty much what you’d expect – crab, shrimp, crawfish, all that stuff you get in a boil. That seemed to be their main thing, these seafood boils. So, I went for one of their signature ones. Figured that was the way to go. Ordered a beer as well, just a plain old lager. It was cold, did the job.

My Take on the Food

Alright, so the food turned up. Came in one of those big plastic bags, all steamy. They just dump it out on the paper they put on the table. You know the drill if you’ve been to one of these places.

Inside the bag, there was a mix of things. My boil had:

  • Shrimp
  • Some crab legs
  • Corn on the cob
  • Potatoes
  • And sausage

I asked for a medium spice level. Didn’t want to go too crazy and not be able to taste anything. The shrimp were alright, cooked through properly. The crab legs, well, they were crab legs. You always gotta put in some effort for crab, right? No surprises there.

The main thing, really, is the seasoning they cook it all in. And it was… okay. Just okay. Not bad, but it wasn’t something that made me sit up and say ‘wow’ either. I’ve definitely had better, and I’ve had worse. The corn and potatoes did a good job soaking up the flavor, which is always a plus. The sausage was, well, it was sausage. Pretty standard stuff.

Thing is with these seafood boil restaurants, sometimes it feels like they’re all pretty similar. You get the bag, you get a bib, you make a mess. It’s more about the whole experience of it, I reckon, than discovering some amazing new taste sensation. And that’s okay. Sometimes that’s exactly what you’re in the mood for. But you don’t go into it expecting some kind of life-altering meal to come out of a plastic bag, if you catch my drift. It’s like those big chain restaurants, you know what you’re getting.

The server swung by a couple of times to see if we needed anything. Kept my water topped up. Can’t really complain about the service. They were busy, getting food out, clearing tables. Doing their job.

The ‘bar’ part of ‘Top Crab Seafood and Bar’? Well, it was there. Looked like a regular bar. People were having beers, some mixed drinks. Nothing really stood out about it, just seemed like a normal spot to grab a drink while you wait or with your meal.

So, that was my trip to Top Crab in Savannah. Was it really the ‘top’? Eh, it was a seafood place. It did what it was supposed to do. I got fed, and I left full. Would I be rushing back there next time I’m in town? Honestly, maybe. If I was in that part of Savannah again, and really had a craving for a seafood boil, and just wanted something easy, then yeah, possibly. It’s one of those spots that’s dependable for what it offers. You go, you eat your seafood, you get your hands messy, and you leave probably smelling a bit like garlic and butter. Not a terrible way to spend an evening, but it’s not going to be the main story I tell people about my trip, you know?
