My Trip Down to Natchez and Staying at a B&B
So, I decided I needed a bit of a break, something different. Ended up pointing the car towards Natchez. Heard a lot about the old houses and the river. Figured instead of some bland hotel, I’d try one of those bed and breakfast places everyone talks about down there. Seemed like the thing to do in Natchez, right? Get the ‘authentic’ feel or whatever.

Finding one wasn’t too hard, went online and looked through a bunch. Some looked way too fancy, like you couldn’t touch anything. Others looked a bit run down in the pictures. I settled on one that seemed like a good middle ground. Looked historical, but comfortable, you know? Booking was straightforward, just filled out a form online and got a confirmation email.
Arrival and Getting Settled
Drove into Natchez, found the street easy enough. The place looked just like the pictures, big old house, huge porch with rocking chairs. Felt kinda grand pulling up. Parked the car and walked up. Have to say, walking into one of these places feels different than a hotel lobby. Much quieter, felt more like walking into someone’s actual home, which I guess it is.
A lady came out, introduced herself as the owner. Super friendly, showed me around the main floor a bit. Lots of dark wood, old furniture, paintings. Definitely had that historical vibe down. She took me upstairs to my room. It was big, much bigger than a standard hotel room, with a giant four-poster bed. Looked impressive, though honestly, those tall beds can be a pain to climb into.
The room itself was… interesting. Definitely clean, but you could tell it was old. Floorboards creaked a little, the window latches were the old kind. Had its own bathroom, which was updated, thankfully. Didn’t fancy sharing one down the hall. It had character, I’ll give it that. Not sterile like a hotel. Little touches, like some old books on a shelf, a quilt on the bed.
The Breakfast Part and Overall Feel
Next morning, headed down for the ‘breakfast’ part of the deal. This was in a formal dining room. Big table, set with nice china. Felt a bit formal just for breakfast. The owner cooked it all herself. We had:
- Eggs
- Bacon
- Grits (of course, it’s the South)
- Biscuits
- Fruit
It was a proper spread, way better than a continental breakfast buffet. Sat with a few other couples staying there. Made for some decent conversation, talking about what everyone was planning to see in town. That’s something you don’t really get at a big hotel, sitting around a table chatting with strangers over breakfast.
Overall, the stay was pretty good. It was quiet, felt more personal. The owners were right there if you needed anything. It’s definitely a different pace. You gotta be okay with the quirks of an old house and maybe being a bit more social than you would be tucked away in a hotel room. For a trip to a place like Natchez, it felt right. Gave me a better sense of the place than staying by the highway would have. Would I do it again? Yeah, probably. It works for certain kinds of trips.
