Felt like stepping inside a hug. Dumped my bag and immediately face-planted onto the feather mattress – softer than my ex’s promises.

Woke up at sunrise because light was bleeding gold all over the river. Sat on the window seat wrapped in quilt, watching tugboats cut through fog. No TV in the room, just shelves crammed with mystery novels and a record player spinning crackly jazz. Later I wandered down to the garden where Martha was grilling local trout for guests. Ate at a picnic table with strangers who felt like friends by dessert.
The real kicker? After checkout, I drove to three fancy hotels in town pretending to shop for a “friend’s wedding.” Peeked into their rooms – sterile white walls, same generic art, windows staring into parking lots. Felt like comparing hospital rooms to someone’s actual home. Yeah, the B&B bathroom was small and I heard floorboards squeak at midnight. But man, falling asleep to river whispers beats AC units growling any damn day.
